The following is a partial list of external (non-Pittsburgh) medical education conferences and workshops. Please use the links provided to find more information.
- Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine - AAIM was formed when several organizations joined to teach internal medicine. Their annual conference, Academic Internal Medicine Week, is in April.
- Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions - The Alliance offers a variety of face-to-face events to provide members and others in the community with forums for learning, sharing, and networking.
- American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) - ACEP Teaching Fellowship provides skills and knowledge to become an effective medical educator.
- Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) - A list of sponsored conferences is available on this link. The annual AAMC meeting occurs in November. The AAMC has 4 regional Groups on Educational Affairs (GEA). Each GEA holds its own regional spring meeting. Below are links to the 4 groups:
- Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry (ADMSEP) - A list of upcoming and future meetings is found here.
- Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) - The AMEE annual conference occurs in late August/Mid-September
- Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) - APGO holds two major educational seminars each year.
- Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) - The ASPE Conference occurs in June. It is an annual meeting for the faculty and administrators who run standardized patient programs, and it reaches beyond the arena of healthcare to cover all forms of human-based simulation education.
- Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) - This is a United Kingdom focused, international organization whose mission statement is focused on “advancing scholarship in medical education.”
- Association for Surgical Education (ASE) - Annual meeting is in April
- Canadian Conference on Medical Education (CCME) - The CCME welcomes its international colleagues and other partners to its annual meeting in April.
- Consortium of Neurology Clerkship Directors (CNCD) - The annual meeting occurs with the American Academy of Neurology.
- Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics (COMSEP) - The COMSEP annual meetings occurs in March.
- Directors of Clinical Skills Courses (DOCS) - DOCS is a group of medical educators who teach clinical skills to medical students. Their annual meeting occurs in conjunction with the annual AAMC meeting.
- The Generalists in Medical Education - The Generalists in Medical Education are a group of educators including basic scientists, clinicians, and other educators interested in medical education. They teach, conduct research, and provide support services in all levels of medical education. Their annual meeting occurs right before the annual AAMC meeting.
- Harvard Macy Institute Programs - The Harvard Macy Institute Programs offer sessions on assessment, innovation, technology and professional development.
- The Hedwig van Ameringen Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) - 'The ELAM program is a year-long part-time fellowship for women faculty in schools of medicine, dentistry, public health, and pharmacy.
- International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) - “IAMSE is a nonprofit professional development society organized and directed by health professions educators whose goals include promoting excellence and innovation in teaching, student assessment, program evaluation, instructional technology, human simulation, and learner-centered education.”
- Learning Communities Institute (LCI) - “The LCI is a not-for-profit organization of institutions, learners, educators, and administrators who are working together to promote, enhance and evaluate the use of learning communities in medical education. Through collaboration among learning communities, the LCI seeks to improve health care education across the continuum of learning by fostering scholarship, professional development and the centrality of relationships among learners and teachers.”
- Medical Education Research Certificate Program of the AAMC (MERC) - Program to assist with the purpose and processes of medical education research.
- MGH Institute of Health Professions - A graduate school founded by Massachusetts General Hospital, the GH Institute of Health Professions offers a variety of master's programs designed for credentialed health professions and others involved in health professionals education. Of interest to those involved in health professions education are the Masters of Science in Health Professions Education Program and the Health Professions Education Certification program.
- Ottawa Conference in Medical Education - The Ottawa Conferences are held biennially and focus on excellence in assessment and evaluation.
- Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education (SACME) - SACME hosts an annual meetings to advance the CME field.
- Society for General Internal Medicine (SGIM) - SGIM hosts an annual meeting in May. They also have regional meetings.
- Society for Simulation in Health Care (SSH) - SSH meetings provide simulation education to healthcare professionals.
- Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) - Has an annual conference in the Spring.

- Team-Based Learning Collaborative (TBLC) - TBLC has annual spring conferences and regional workshops during which the structure, process, and essential characteristics of an effective TBL module are emphasized.
