Overview

At PittMed, we recognize the importance of leadership skill development. The leadership thread is built off of the 4 quadrants of emotional and social intelligence theory- self awareness, self management, social connections, and relationship management as well as their associated subtopics.

During your first year, the leadership thread will guide you to identify your core values, harness your strengths, and create a personal vision for your future. Through the use of reflective activities and ongoing discussions with your coach, you will continue to develop your professional identity. You will learn the basics of project management, and have the opportunity to practice those skills with your Community Alliance Project.

As you progress through the curriculum into the clerkship years, we will have further discussions about team dynamics, discovering the benefits of different conflict management styles, and practicing crucial conversation skills which are essential to providing the best outcomes for your patients, their families, the communities in which they live, and beyond. We will endcap the preclinical curriculum with a discussion on civil discourse as a tool for effective advocacy, to help prepare for our students to lean in to their roles as healers, advocates, innovators, and of course leaders.
