Course Description

The four week inpatient sub-internship will give the advanced student who is interested in the field of physiatry an experience similar to an Acting Internship. This course provides the medical student with a basic understanding of team function and allows him or her to begin to assume a role similar to a junior resident.

The student will prescribe comprehensive programs for general rehabilitation patients and clinically manage medically complex rehabilitation patients.

There will be no overnight call on the sub-internship rotation. The student will receive a schedule and contact information for preceptors on the first day of the sub-internship. Students will receive evaluations by the attending(s) based on their clinical experience.

Course Objectives

Students must demonstrated the ability to appraise and assimilate scientific evidence. The student will perform the history and physical examination of new admissions, as directed by the senior resident and/or the attending physician. The student is expected to be knowledgeable of and manage all aspects of the patients' clinical care under supervision. The student is to interact with physicians, nurses, and therapists responsible for providing care to the patient. The student will develop a basic knowledge base of the medical conditions and pertinent rehabilitation tools and apply that knowledge to patient care in a medically complex rehabilitation setting.

Requirements

Must have passed one general PM&R rotation and must be a MS4. Prior arrangements must be made with Kristie Westerlund, Administrative Coordinator and prior approval obtained from Dr. Brad Dicianno, MD to enroll.
